Corbawn lane coastal defence

Client : Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council

Date :2019

Works description: The public beach access structure at Corbawn Lane, Shankill, Co. Dublin was identified as at risk of future instability due to coastal erosion. The structure was being undermined and outflanked. The

cliffs adjacent to the access structure were over-steep and at risk of falling onto the beach as was the access structure itself.

The proposed works include the refurbishment of the existing access structure, cliff stability works and coastal protection works over some 180m in length.

 Armourstone revetment works;

Rock armour was brought to site by barge from Roadstone Arklow Co. Wicklow.

A specialist  barge was used  capable of carrying 100 ton per load and landing on the beach at high tide for unloading.

Rock was unloaded adjacent to Shanganagh treatment plant and moved to Corbawn lane by dumptruck for placing. A total of 7000 tons was brought to site

 Soil nailing and shotcreteting  to the adjacent cliffs

Cliff face adjacent to Corbawn lane access point required soil nailing and shotcreting to stabilize cliff face a coloured dye was added to the last layer.

 Scour protection/underpinning to the existing structure and  concreting works

The existing stair access to beach was badly undermined and required scour protection and underpinning. The existing concrete structure around outfall pipes required dismantling and rebuilding.
